CHIA Objectives

Promote the profession of health care interpreters through:
  • Establishing Standards of Practice
    (The California Standards for Healthcare Interpreters: Ethical Principles, Protocols & Guidance on Roles & Intervention, was released September 28, 2001 at the CHIA 2nd Annual Conference.  This document is online. Click HERE to access this.) 
  • Adopting a Code of Ethics
    (See the Standards document!)
  • Creating an Interpreter Certification Program
  • Sponsoring Internships and Scholarships
  • Advocating for cross-cultural awareness through education of healthcare professionals
  • Encouraging the development of advanced level training in health care interpretation at institutions of higher education
  • Promoting the networking of institutions that provide Interpretation Services
  • Making recommendations on existing or new policies affecting patients with limited or no English proficiency
