Saturday, September 8, 2001 9:30am - 12:30pm

About 30 people were on hand for a very interesting set of presentations, as well as information on the upcoming CHIA conference on September 29 at Valley Children's Hospital, north of Fresno.  Here is what participants heard about:

1. Writing & Passing the (CPS) Medical Interpreter Exam

Presenter: Nestor Wagner, Southern California School of Interpretation

Mr. Wagner described the Medical Interpreter Exam administered by the Cooperative Personnel Services (CPS): how difficult it is, what is necessary to pass the exam, what to concentrate on.  This certification is required of interpreters who assist with Workers' Compensation cases and other health matters that can end in court-determined compensation.

2. Report-back on the Cultural Diversity and Cultural Competency in the Workplace Training

Presenter: Diana Sanchez, LA Care
Competency workshops held July 23 through July 27, sponsored by
The California Endowment.

3. "Understanding Health-care Delivery Systems
in Los Angeles (class 101)

Presenter: Linda Dacon,

In 1993, the State of California began to create strategic plans for managed
care. These plans include mandates for culturally sensitive and
linguistically competent services.  These relatively new requirements mean
greater opportunities for medical interpreters.

This presentation was very helpful for interpreters wanting to understand the requirements that healthcare providers must meet in serving Limited English Proficient
patients in the LA area, although many of the requirements apply to all counties in CA.

Ms. Dacon has 28 years experience in public health, immunization outreach,
23 yrs with county health community health plans, Medi-Cal Managed Care
Worked for Medi-Cal Managed Care Planning Council

  •  About 35 CHIA members and others turned out at LA Care, (19th floor, 555 West 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013)  on Saturday, July 21 for  Claudio Federico's presentation  on telephonic interpreting. Mr. Federico, with Tele-Interpreters, presented a case study transcription of a 911 call containing many challenging elements for a telephonic interpreter.  The participatory session was well received, and highlighted some of the differences between in-person and telephonic interpreting, as well as some of the adjustments that are required by telephonic interpreters.  There were many questions about protocol and strategy as well.  This was followed by a session on CHIA's developing Standards of Practice document, presented by CHIA Executive Director, Niels Agger-Gupta, PhD.  Chapter members are requested to mail or fax their comments on the draft document to the CHIA office so their comments can be included in the final document.  LA Chapter member with 3 or more years of medical interpreting experience will also be able to participate in focus groups on CHIA's Standards which will take place in September.  More information on this next month...  Lastly, Niels demonstrated the website, including the CHIA September 29 conference website, and resource links for interpreters.
