The Northern Chapter hosted a very successful  workshop on oncology and hematology on Saturday, June 23 at Children’s Hospital Oakland (CHO).  The workshop was on "What to expect when interpreting for Pediatric Oncology patients and providers. "  Dr. Barbara Beach, CHO oncologist, and Diane Malek, LCSW,  gave a thorough overview about about what an interpreter can expect in interpreting for families/providers in oncology.  The 40 people in attendance heard from interpreters about their perspectives on providing this service and the kinds of experiences that are faced.  Thanks to Nancy Stern, Director of Interpreting Services at CHO, and her interpreters for hosting this wonderful event.  Interpreters present also were able to review the draft CHIA Healthcare Interpreter Ethics and Standards of Practice.
