This is exciting news! Our CHIA-Sacramento
members have been
invited to take part in a special lecture by Ms. Betty Lee Hawks,
M.A.,
who will be visiting Sacramento at that time. Ms. Hawks is
Special
Assistant and Senior Advisor to the Director of the Office of
Minority
Health, which is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and
Human
Services offering programs that focus on racial and ethnic
minority health.
Ms. Hawks is the OMH lead in the areas of
cancer, women health and AAPI
issues. She also coordinates the HHS response to the White House
Initiative
on AAPIs. The event host is the Asian American Network for Cancer
Awareness, Research and Training (AANCART), which addresses Asian
American
concerns.
Dr Moon Chen, Principal Investigator, National
AANCART, has extended an
invitation to California Healthcare Interpreters Association
(CHIA),
Sacramento Chapter. This reception will offer medical
interpreters and
others interested in API health a chance to meet Ms Hawks and to
learn
about OMH and their work on culturally and linguistically
appropriate
services, HHS activities, and other topics. Ms Hawks will share
her views
on what is going on with regard to cultural competence and
overcoming
linguistic barriers at the Federal level. She will also discuss
other
areas, including cancer and women health issues.
I encourage you to attend. This will give our
medical interpreters a chance
to meet Ms. Hawks and to learn about medical interpreting-related
issues
from a federal perspective.
Enclosed please find the announcement and the
electronic RSVP. If you have
any question, please call (415) 551-0520. RSVP is due by Monday,
November
18, 2002.
CHIA will have a display table at the meeting
hall, showcasing our work to
the community and to healthcare providers. Also, this event can
be used as
a training opportunity for our CHIA members and a marketing tool
for future
new members. There will be a reception and social time at the
beginning of
the meeting. CHIA members and interested individuals could stay
behind for
another short-time gathering on CHIA briefings.
Our thanks go to Alice Chan and Bernie Valdez,
Co-Chair of the Training
Committee, and also to Marbella Sala, who made arrangements to
reserve the
meeting place for this event.
I hope to see all of you there. Please RSVP as
soon as possible.
