CHIA UPDATE - August 2003
August 25, 2003 - SPOKESPERSONS NEEDED:
As reported last week, the Pacific News Service (PNS) will
be working under a grant from The California Endowment to help non-English
speaking patients understand the valuable interpreter services available to them
in health facilities. CHIA has been asked to help PNS identify interpreter
spokespeople available to go on radio, particularly in the Los Angeles area. If
you are interested, please contact
Patricia Johnson at the Pacific News Service. If you would like more
information about this project, please go to:

CHIA THIRD ANNUAL MEETING DEADLINE APPROACHES:
Preregistration for CHIA’s Third Annual Conference will cost more after
September 10. To make payment easier, CHIA’s website now accepts credit card
payment for both the
Annual Meeting and for CHIA membership. See you on September 26-27 in
Sacramento.
VOLUNTEER INTERPRETERS SOUGHT: The Samaritan House
Free Clinics in San Mateo and Redwood are seeking two volunteer interpreters to
help serve the clinics’ predominantly Latino patient population. The clinics
operate with volunteer physicians and nurses who provide free primary and
specialty care services plus free medications. The clinics are not federally
funded, and seek no reimbursement for services. The patient population is low
income and medically underserved. Those wanting to help or who want more
information can contact Medical Director Tim Trompeter, MD, (650) 839-1447 or
email rwcmed@samaritanhouse.com
COMPARISON OF REVISED FEDERAL LEP GUIDANCE: Attached is a side-by-side
comparison developed by the National Health Law Program of the differences
between the 2000 and 2002 Health and Human Services (HHS) LEP Guidance, and the
2003 Guidance from HHS and the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The comparison
points out several areas in which the new HHS and DOJ guidances differ. The
analysis comes courtesy of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care
Policy and Research Committee.
