FEBRUARY 6, 2004 HOSPITAL PRESENTATION – CHIA and St. Joseph Hospital of Orange are sponsoring a forum from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14 that will include presentations Dr. Hammji, a general surgeon at the hospital and a panel discussion with representatives of the UC Irvine Medical Center Interpreter Services Department. The event will be at Zoul Auditorium, St. Joseph Hospital, 1100 W. Stewart Dr., in Orange. For directions, go to www.sjo.org. BAY AREA CHAPTER EVENT - Holly Mikkelson, Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, will make a presentation on “Memorization and Notetaking Techniques” at the next meeting of CHIA’s Bay Area Chapter, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. The meeting is being hosted by the Interpreter Services department at Valley Medical Center, 2325 Enborg Lane, San Jose. The meeting will take place in Room 306 in the Administration Offices Building. Refreshments will be provided. The presentation is free to CHIA members. A donation of $10 is recommended for non-members. The new chair, who is director of the Hmong Women’s Heritage Association, emphasized the need for strong interpreter training programs in Northern California and set a goal or obtaining abundant scholarships for CHIA members in the Sacramento Chapter. The next meeting has been set for March 6. For more information email myxly@hmongwomenheritage.org JOHN HILLSON MEMORIAL – Regretfully we must report that John Hillson, husband of CHIA President Beverly Truemann, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 29. Mr. Hillson was a poet and social activist. A celebration of his life has been set for noon, Sunday, March 7 at the Romero Hall of the immigrant-rights organization CARECEN, 2845 W. 7th St. (cross street Hoover), Los Angeles.
