Job Opening:  BILINGUAL CANCER INFORMATION SPECIALIST CANCER INFORMATION SERVICE

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responds to requests for cancer related information inquiries from the general public and health professionals received primarily by phone and/or LiveHelp (Instant Messaging), for the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service. Identifies information needs of user. Establishes a good rapport with user in order to facilitate open and full discussion relating to user's needs. Selects and uses appropriate resource information (primarily from www.cancer.gov) to respond to calls/LiveHelp in a knowledgeable and professional manner. Provides clinical trial counseling and collects users’ relevant medical history to determine initial eligibility for clinical trials. Provides telephone and/or LiveHelp smoking cessation counseling utilizing support appropriate to CIS counseling model and incorporating approved materials and referrals. Regularly carries out such other duties such as participating on teams that work on projects to support the retrieval, storage and dissemination of state-of-the-art information to users, and program quality assurance. May represent the CIS and the Northern California Cancer Center (NCCC) by staffing CIS exhibits and displays at conferences and appropriate health fairs as needed, educating the general public and health professional at these events. Participates in and may assist in providing designated training and continuing education programs as required. Implements research protocols with users as required, including conducting surveys and proactively delivering health messages.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum bachelor’s or RN degree or two years direct CIS experience. Previous experience as a medical information specialist or related experience preferred. Experience in entering and/or retrieving data on personal computer. Good judgment, sensitivity, good interpersonal skills/telephone manner and voice. Demonstrated team approach. Willingness to be on the phone/LiveHelp a high proportion of workday. Ability to assimilate medical information. Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment. Proficiency in Spanish. OTHER: Must take training and pass post-training exam. Must meet program requirements for yearly continuing education. Required to have calls (and LiveHelp transcripts) recorded, and/or monitored and evaluated by both California CIS Region management staff and NCI to assure consistency and high quality.

STARTING SALARY: $18.81/hour

Job Opening: Lead Interpreter 

Full-time. Two years previous experience in interpreting in healthcare setting required. College degree preferred. Knowledge and understanding of HIPAA and California Standards for Health Care Interpreters: Ethical Principles, Protocols, and Guidance on Roles and Interventions.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and required language (e.g. Spanish and Cambodian). Speaks fluently in specified non-English language. Strong medical terminology skills in both languages.

Proficient in MS Windows 95+. Certificate in Interpreter training. Certificate in Train and Trainer in Interpreting preferred. Certificate in Health Care related field. Bachelor's degree in Health Care related field preferred. Must pass language proficiency test.

We  have an opening at Queen of the Valley for a Spanish Interpreter/Translator for part time on Tue and Thursday from 7:30 to 4:00 p.m.

JOB DESCRIPTION: PROJECT MANAGER

 Special Service for Groups / PALS for Health program
Spanish Language Health Care Interpretation Project

 CLASSIFICATION:
Administrative tract position in health/social service arena.

 BACKGROUND:
The PALS for Health program provides
(1) Health care related interpretation and translation services targeting limited English proficient (LEP) communities, and the providers who administer to them;
(2) language proficiency assessment and health care interpreter training;
(3) provider cultural training and outreach services;
(4) health consumer and provider education on language rights in health care; and
(5) advocates on issues affecting limited English proficient (LEP) health consumers.

The program serves all of Los Angeles County and Orange County.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the effective implementation and promotion of project activities such as:
- Project promotion and outreach to target population(s).
- Recruitment and evaluation of health care interpreters.
- Coordination and facilitation of interpreter training sessions.
- Coordination and dispatch of all interpretation and translation requests.
- Coordination and facilitation on community and provider language rights trainings.
- Assist in program evaluation and development activities.
- Participate in various task forces, health fairs and community magnet events.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with community organizations, provider, policy and media groups.
- Perform other tasks and assignments as required.

Reports directly to the Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate degree in administration, public health, or social welfare (preferred), or undergraduate degree plus at least 3 years of non-profit experience.

- Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish. Bilingual/bicultural skills required.

- Must have knowledge & understanding of the various aspects of Latino/Hispanic populations in LA County.

- Knowledge of language access issues in health care settings.

- Must have previous experience in project implementation and evaluation. Prior training experiences a plus.

- Working knowledge in computer operations including: Microsoft Office (Word, Access, and Excel).

 

Salary classification:      Exempt.                       

$33,000 to $35,000 a year, commensurate with experience.

 Asian Pacific Health Care Venture, Inc. (APHCV) is a non-profit community health center, whose mission is to plan, provide, promote and coordinate accessible, affordable, culturally competent and effective health care services that targets undeserved Asian and Pacific Islanders and offers services to all individuals. 

 DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Obtain accurate medical information and completely fill out history and registration form.

Provide interpretation at scheduled patient visits with clinicians and patients.

Provide interpretation during behavioral health sessions.

Case manage Limited English Proficiency (LEP) clients by providing appropriate referrals to support services, reminding scheduled appointments or following up on missed appointments or abnormal lab results.

Provide health education to patients on various health issues

Provide assistance to clients in public benefit program application such as Medi-Cal, Healthy Families Program, Patient Assistance Programs and others. 

Function as a Comprehensive Perinatal Health Worker (CPHW) upon completion of training and conduct assessment, develop an individual care plan, and provide appropriate intervention per protocol.

Function as a HIV testing counselor upon completion of training

Advocate for patient’s concerns (medical or clinic operation) and effectively communicate that to appropriate individuals

Answer incoming calls; retrieve answering machine messages and return calls. 

Schedule appointments and update daily.

Other duties as assigned.  

 

QUALIFICATION & REQUIREMENTS:

- High school diploma or 1-year minimum of substantial volunteer or working experience in related field. 
- 1 year interpretation and/or translation experience in Spanish
- Strong communication skills.
- Regular predictable attendance during clinic hours.
- Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and with minimum supervision
- Able to work with people of diverse cultural, educational, socio-economic, and linguistic backgrounds
- Legal authorization to work in the United States, a valid California Driver’s license, and access to insured automobile
- Completion of APHCV Health Assessment Form

 

PREFERRED SKILLS:

- Knowledge of health care system in U.S.

Regional Office and/or its Los Angeles Field Office. Salary range is $28,164 to $64,944, depending on experience and qualifications.

Equal Opportunity Specialists investigate complaints, conduct compliance reviews and provide technical assistance and outreach to health and human services institutions, agencies or organizations which are recipients of Federal financial assistance provided by the Department of Health and Human Services. They ensure compliance with civil rights laws and the privacy of protected health information.

Assignments would involve the investigation of possible race, color, national origin, disability, age or sex discrimination under various legal authorities and privacy of health information issues. Applicants should show strong analytical skills and the ability to work both independently and
as a part of a team. Excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills are also required as investigators prepare investigative plans, reports and letters of findings for cases under his/her personal responsibility and interview recipients, spokespersons, employees and others to obtain relevant evidence.
